• As fall progresses, gardeners in mid-Missouri are advised to prepare for the first frost, which has a 50% chance of occurring by October 23 and a 70% chance by October 29, according to University of Missouri Extension horticulturist David Trinklein (High Plains Journal, 2026).
• Tropical plants are particularly vulnerable to temperatures below 45°F (7°C), while most other plants can withstand temperatures as low as 28°F (-2°C) with minimal damage.

Impact & Risks

The first frost signals the end of the growing season for many plants, particularly tropical species and tender crops. Gardeners may face challenges in protecting delicate plants, such as tomatoes and flowers, from frost damage. While insulation can provide some protection, it only offers a slight temperature difference, and prolonged cold spells may still harm plants. The transition to colder weather is a natural part of the Earth's cycle, but it can be difficult for gardeners to watch their plants succumb to frost. Preparing for this change can help mitigate frustration and allow gardeners to focus on essential autumn tasks.
