Impact & Risks

The increasing frequency of landslides poses significant risks to travellers, local communities, and infrastructure in the Himalayan region. Roads and bridges are becoming more vulnerable due to insufficient planning that fails to account for changing rainfall patterns, slope instability, and flood risks. The February 2021 Rishiganga valley disaster in Uttarakhand highlighted the catastrophic consequences of inadequate infrastructure design, with bridges and roads destroyed by extreme sediment transport and debris flows. Such events not only disrupt connectivity but also endanger lives and livelihoods in these regions.
