A recent study led by researchers from Montana State University, the University of Wyoming, and Colorado School of Mines has revealed that severe snow droughts in the western United States are now four times more frequent compared to the preindustrial era.
The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on July 20, 2026, analyzed snowpack levels across 11 Pacific and Mountain West states, including Montana, using a physics-based computer weather model.
