• Mumbai experienced its hottest October day in over a decade on Monday, 12 October 2026, with temperatures soaring to 38.2°C at the Santacruz Observatory. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this was 5.1°C above the seasonal average. The heatwave conditions were attributed to an anticyclone over Gujarat and Maharashtra, combined with easterly winds along the coast, which delayed the arrival of the sea breeze. This marks the second heatwave in October for Mumbai, with a previous high of 37.8°C recorded on 9 October
• The IMD has issued a yellow warning for 13 October, cautioning residents about hot and humid conditions in isolated areas.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat has disrupted the usual post-monsoon transition into cooler weather, making October feel more like peak summer. Residents, especially those in coastal areas, are at risk of heat-related illnesses due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. The delay in sea breeze has exacerbated discomfort, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and outdoor workers. The ongoing heatwave could also impact festive activities and outdoor events planned for the month.
