Maharashtra Faces 19% Rainfall Deficit as Monsoon Withdraws
IN · Published Oct 5, 2026
• The southwest monsoon has withdrawn from most parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Nagpur, and is expected to vacate the remaining areas soon.
• Maharashtra recorded 804.4 mm of rainfall between 1st June and 30th September 2026, against the seasonal normal of 994.5 mm, resulting in a 19% shortfall.

Impact & Risks

The rainfall deficit has significant implications for agriculture and water resources in Maharashtra, particularly in Marathwada and Vidarbha, which recorded the highest shortfalls. The prolonged dry spell may exacerbate drought conditions, as the state government has already declared drought in 32 districts. Farmers and residents in affected areas may face challenges related to crop failure, water scarcity, and reduced groundwater levels. The lack of post-monsoon systems until mid-October further limits the chances of recovery.
