• Mumbai, India's financial capital, has implemented a dense network of 139 rain gauges to monitor rainfall in real-time, particularly during the southwest monsoon season when the city receives an average of 230 cm of rainfall.
• The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) have developed a mobile application that provides live, location-specific rainfall data, along with other weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, and wind.

Impact & Risks

Real-time rainfall data is crucial for managing Mumbai's infrastructure, especially during heavy monsoon periods that can lead to flooding and transport disruptions. The dense network of rain gauges helps authorities like the MCGM and disaster management teams respond more effectively to weather-related challenges. However, the city's coastal location makes it vulnerable to extreme weather events, necessitating continuous monitoring and preparedness.
