• Mumbai experienced its second-lowest September rainfall in the past decade, with the Santacruz observatory recording 306.6mm of rain, which is 15% below the average of 359.6mm for the month.
• The driest September in the last decade was in 2018, with Santacruz receiving only 73.1mm and Colaba 59.5mm.

Impact & Risks

The uneven distribution of rainfall this monsoon season has led to long dry spells, particularly after mid-August, affecting water availability and agricultural activities in some areas. Heavy rainfall during certain periods caused localised flooding, but the overall deficit in September may impact groundwater recharge and reservoir levels. Areas in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, are still expected to receive light to moderate rain before the monsoon fully withdraws.
