Mumbai records sharp decline in monsoon-related illnesses
IN · Published Sep 24, 2026
• Mumbai has witnessed a significant drop in cases of chikungunya, dengue, leptospirosis, gastroenteritis, and COVID-19 during the monsoon season this year, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data. Between 1 June and 15 September 2026, chikungunya cases fell by 88.52%, dengue by 9.09%, leptospirosis by 43.81%, gastroenteritis by 15.01%, and COVID-19 by 76.07% compared to the same period in
• However, malaria and H1N1 cases saw a sharp rise, with malaria increasing by 32.07% and H1N1 by 650.77%. The BMC attributes the decline in most illnesses to rigorous pre-monsoon preparedness, including vector-control measures, fever surveys, and prophylactic treatments in flood-prone areas.

Impact & Risks

The reduction in monsoon-related illnesses has positively impacted public health in Mumbai, particularly in densely populated areas and slums. However, the rise in malaria and H1N1 cases remains a concern, especially for vulnerable populations exposed to stagnant water and unhygienic conditions. The increase in H1N1 cases highlights the need for enhanced surveillance and vaccination efforts. While the overall decline in diseases is encouraging, continued vigilance and targeted interventions are necessary to address the exceptions.
