Turbulence is now the leading cause of in-flight injuries worldwide, with India particularly vulnerable due to its expanding domestic passenger base and climate conditions. Passengers who fail to fasten seat belts during turbulence risk serious injuries, as evidenced by incidents like the SpiceJet flight SG945 in 2022, where unsecured passengers suffered severe injuries. Rising turbulence exposure is a growing operational risk for airlines, especially during pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons. Northern India faces heightened risks due to its proximity to jet streams, which generate clear-air turbulence. The aviation industry must address these challenges to ensure passenger safety.
