IMD Issues Orange Alert for Mumbai Amid Heavy Rain Forecast
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall from 26th to 30th September
• This weather activity is attributed to a well-marked low-pressure system over the northwest and central Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a depression within 12 hours and move westward, crossing the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of 27th September. A trough extending from this system to the south Maharashtra coast is influencing widespread rainfall across the region, including Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph are also anticipated at isolated locations during this period.
Impact & Risks
The heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to impact daily life in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and other parts of Maharashtra, potentially causing waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and localised flooding. Fishermen have been warned of squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph along the North Maharashtra coast from 27th to 30th September, and 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph from 28th to 30th September. Similar conditions are expected along the South Maharashtra-Goa coast from 26th to 30th September, posing risks to maritime activities.
