Nagpur May Reintroduce Alternate-Day Water Supply Amid Drought
IN · Published Oct 3, 2026
• Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is considering reintroducing alternate-day water supply due to shrinking reservoir levels. The city last implemented this measure during the 2019 water crisis. Currently, reservoir levels are at 58%, significantly lower than last year’s 85.71%. The Maharashtra water resources department has directed civic bodies to prioritise drinking water availability until August
• Officials are concerned about further reductions in water stock due to rising temperatures and evaporation. The NMC is supplying around 770 MLD of water, slightly below peak summer levels of 780 MLD.

Impact & Risks

The declining reservoir levels in Nagpur pose a significant risk to the city's water supply, especially as summer approaches. Residents may face reduced access to water, with alternate-day supply being a likely measure to conserve resources. The situation could worsen if temperatures continue to rise, leading to increased evaporation and further depletion of water reserves. Industrial and construction activities may also face restrictions to prioritise drinking water needs.
