Impact & Risks

Residents and visitors in North Carolina face heightened risks of venomous snakebites, particularly in areas such as the Piedmont, Blue Ridge, and coastal plains. While copperhead bites are rarely fatal, they can cause significant pain and swelling. Other species, such as timber rattlesnakes and cottonmouths, pose additional risks in specific regions. Symptoms of snakebites include puncture marks, swelling, and nausea, and severe cases may lead to breathing difficulties or muscle twitching. Immediate medical attention is critical to mitigate health risks.
