Climate change linked to deadly Nepal glacier collapse: Analysis

A report by the World Weather Attribution has highlighted the role of human-induced climate change in the catastrophic glacier and rock collapse in Nepal on 26 August
The disaster, which occurred near Nepal's border with China, unleashed flooding along the Trishuli River corridor, killing over 1,300 people and leaving more than 5,000 missing. The analysis found that global warming has thinned glaciers and thawed mountain permafrost, destabilising slopes in the Himalayan region. Rising temperatures have pushed the freezing threshold higher by approximately 100 metres per decade, exposing rock to thawing and weakening its structure. Additionally, glaciers in the region have been retreating for decades, losing mass at a rate of over half a metre annually, further contributing to slope instability.

Impact & Risks

The collapse caused widespread destruction, with billions of dollars in damages and significant loss of life. Communities along the Trishuli River corridor were severely affected, highlighting the vulnerability of settlements in narrow Himalayan valleys. The report warns that rising temperatures and glacier retreat are increasing the risk of similar disasters, as mountain slopes become less stable. The Himalayan region, home to the largest volume of snow and ice outside the polar areas, supports billions of people through its river systems. However, the ongoing impacts of climate change threaten the stability of these ecosystems and the livelihoods dependent on them.
