Communities in high-altitude regions, including the Himalayas, are at significant risk from climate-induced geological hazards. The rapid melting of glaciers and permafrost is increasing the likelihood of landslides, floods, and earthquakes. In the Himalayan region alone, there are thousands of glacial lakes, with around 200 identified as posing a direct threat to downstream communities. These events can lead to loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and long-term economic impacts. The cascading effects of these hazards, such as blocked rivers and unstable terrains, further exacerbate the risks to local populations.
