Catastrophic Flooding in Nepal and Tibet: Hundreds Dead, Villages Submerged

Catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-China border has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people in Nepal and Tibet, with many more still missing, including foreign nationals and pilgrims.
The disaster occurred on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, when part of a glacier broke off from the Langtang Lirung peak, near the border with Tibet.

Impact & Risks

The flooding has caused widespread destruction, burying villages and submerging homes along the Trishuli River. Popular tourist spots, such as Syapru Besi, have been severely impacted, with buildings toppled and swept away. The disaster has left a wasteland in its wake, which experts believe will take years to recover. The event highlights the vulnerability of high-altitude regions to glacial hazards, which may be exacerbated by climate change. While scientists cannot definitively link this specific event to climate change, the melting of glaciers and permafrost due to global warming is destabilising mountain slopes, increasing the likelihood of such disasters.
