Nepal Resumes Electricity Exports to India After Flash Flood Disruption
Nepal · Published Oct 26, 2026
• Nepal has resumed exporting electricity to India, generating $39 million in revenue between mid-September and mid-October
• This comes after a temporary halt caused by flash floods in August, which were triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border. The floods caused significant damage to infrastructure, including hydropower plants, and resulted in the loss of around 1,400 lives, with over 5,000 people still missing. Despite these challenges, Nepal has managed to recover its electricity exports, with nearly two-thirds of the supply to India occurring under bilateral agreements. Additionally, Nepal has resumed exporting 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh via India's transmission network.

Impact & Risks

The resumption of electricity exports from Nepal to India is a positive development for both countries, as it helps stabilise energy supplies and supports economic recovery in Nepal following the devastating floods. However, the damage to hydropower plants and other infrastructure in Nepal highlights the vulnerability of the region to natural disasters. The loss of life and displacement of thousands of people underscore the need for enhanced disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience in the region.
