• An analysis of air quality across seven major metropolitan cities in India from 1 January to 25 October 2026 reveals significant disparities in air pollution levels. The study, conducted by AQI.IN, utilised 298 consecutive days of daily Air Quality Index (AQI) observations based on the US-AQI standard. New Delhi recorded the worst air quality with a mean AQI of 151.6, followed by Kolkata at 133.
• Both cities experienced over 90 days with AQI levels above the 'Unhealthy' threshold of

Impact & Risks

The findings highlight the severe air pollution challenges faced by residents of New Delhi and Kolkata, particularly during winter months when thermal inversions trap pollutants near the ground. Prolonged exposure to high levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) poses significant health risks, including respiratory and cardiovascular issues. Conversely, residents of coastal cities like Chennai, Bangalore, and Mumbai enjoy relatively better air quality due to natural ventilation and monsoon rains, reducing their exposure to harmful pollutants.
