IMD Issues Orange Alert for Rain and Thunderstorms in Delhi-NCR
IN · Published Oct 15, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Delhi-NCR as rain and thunderstorms swept through the region on Thursday, October 15,
• Moderate to intense rainfall was observed in parts of north and north-west Delhi, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph and gusts up to 60 kmph. Lighter showers and thunderstorms were reported in other areas of the capital. The rainfall is attributed to a western disturbance, a weather system that often triggers unsettled conditions in northern India. The IMD predicts that cloudy skies and moderate rain may persist through Friday, October 16, before conditions begin to dry out on Saturday, October 17.

Impact & Risks

The rainfall and gusty winds are expected to impact traffic and outdoor activities in Delhi-NCR, particularly in areas experiencing heavier showers. Water accumulation on roads may slow down commuters, and lightning poses a risk to safety. While the rain may temporarily reduce dust levels in the air, any improvement in Delhi's air quality will depend on the intensity of rainfall and subsequent wind conditions. Neighbouring areas such as Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad may also experience similar weather conditions.
