Supreme Court Calls for Strict Action Against Uninsured Vehicles in India
IN · Published Aug 5, 2026
The Supreme Court of India has expressed concern over the high number of uninsured vehicles on Indian roads, which currently stands at 56% of the total 30.4 crore registered vehicles.
A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra highlighted that this issue undermines the purpose of mandatory insurance under Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act, leaving road accident victims without timely compensation.

Impact & Risks

The lack of insurance affects road safety and leaves accident victims and their families without adequate compensation. With 22% of road accidents involving uninsured vehicles, the financial and emotional toll on victims is significant. The proposed measures aim to enforce compliance but could face resistance from vehicle owners and logistical challenges in implementation.
