• Since the onset of the monsoon season, heavy rains and lightning strikes have caused significant damage and loss of life in Tamil Nadu, India.
• Fourteen people have died due to lightning strikes, and the state has experienced 62 landslides in the Nilgiri district, leading to hazardous road conditions and restricted access to mountainous regions such as Nilgiri, Kodaikanal, and Yercaud.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rains and lightning strikes have resulted in fatalities, injuries, and widespread damage to infrastructure and agriculture. Landslides have disrupted transportation, and flooding has displaced residents and damaged homes in Kodaikanal. A rockfall incident in Nilgiri caused the death of a bus driver and injuries to a conductor. Cracks in a 30-year-old bridge in Kodaikanal pose risks to 600–700 families relying on it for access. Submerged farmland in Nagapattinam threatens agricultural productivity, while rising water levels at the Vaigai Dam could lead to further flooding.
