The destruction of mangroves in 2004 left the North Andaman Islands vulnerable to coastal erosion, storm surges, and loss of biodiversity. However, the natural recovery of these forests is helping to restore their role as carbon sinks and natural coastal defences. The study also underscores the potential risks of alkaline water and unsuitable ground conditions, which can hinder mangrove regrowth. While marine debris has shown some unexpected benefits in aiding mangrove colonisation, its broader environmental impacts remain a concern.
