Coast Guard is urging mariners in Hawaii to take proactive measures as the Central Pacific is forecasted to experience up to 13 tropical cyclones this hurricane season, more than double the usual number, according to the National Weather Service.
Kevin Cooper, a search and rescue program mission coordinator with the Coast Guard, emphasized the importance of monitoring weather updates and preparing vessels for potential storms.

Why It's Important?

The increased number of tropical cyclones poses significant risks to mariners, including hazardous storm conditions that can endanger vessels and crews. Larger vessels are particularly vulnerable if not properly equipped with life rafts and EPIRBs. Loose items from unsecured boats could also create false distress signals, diverting rescue resources. The Coast Guard warns that failing to prepare adequately could result in life-threatening situations. Mariners and recreational ocean users are encouraged to take these warnings seriously to mitigate risks during this active hurricane season.
