• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the formation of a low-pressure area over the south-east Bay of Bengal by October 13, influenced by a cyclonic circulation currently over the Gulf of Thailand. This circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and is expected to move into the Andaman Sea by October
• Heavy rainfall is anticipated in Odisha, with a yellow warning issued for eight districts in the northern region. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h are expected in parts of northern, coastal, and southern Odisha. The southwest monsoon is also in the process of withdrawing from eastern India, but rainfall is likely to persist in the state during this transition.

Impact & Risks

The forecasted low-pressure system and associated weather conditions may lead to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in Odisha, particularly in the northern districts. These conditions could disrupt daily activities, cause waterlogging, and pose risks to infrastructure and agriculture. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning may also increase the risk of injuries or fatalities. Residents in affected areas should remain cautious and follow official advisories to mitigate potential hazards.
