Severe Weather Expected Across Central U.S. This Weekend
US · Published May 15, 2026
A multiday severe weather outbreak is forecast to impact the central United States starting this weekend, with the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (NWS SPC), areas at greatest risk include the Great Plains and the Corn Belt, particularly central and eastern Nebraska, southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota on Sunday.
By Monday, the risk shifts southward to include Kansas, as well as cities like Lincoln, Omaha, and Des Moines.

Why It's Important?

The severe weather poses significant risks to residents across the central U.S., particularly in areas under enhanced risk (Level 3 out of 5) as identified by the NWS SPC. Tornadoes, some potentially strong, and large hail could cause widespread damage to property, vehicles, and crops. Wind gusts associated with these storms may also lead to power outages and structural damage. Urban areas like Omaha, Des Moines, and Kansas City are among those at risk, with potential impacts to transportation and outdoor activities. The timing of these storms, particularly during the evening and overnight hours, could increase the danger as visibility is reduced.
