Nor’easter Brings Strong Winds, Coastal Flooding to Outer Banks
US · Published Oct 19, 2026
• A nearly stationary nor’easter off the North Carolina coast is causing significant coastal impacts, including strong winds, dangerous seas, and flooding.
• The Outer Banks, southern Pamlico Sound, and Neuse River basin are experiencing gusts of 40-50 mph and wave heights of 10-15 feet.

Impact & Risks

The Outer Banks faces widespread coastal flooding, beach erosion, and dangerous surf conditions. Areas near Pamlico Sound, including Oriental and New Bern, may see water levels rise 1-2 feet. Rodanthe and Hatteras Point could experience 2-4 feet of inundation, with Highway 12 becoming impassable. Gusty winds may cause damage to unsecured objects, and prolonged swells could exacerbate flooding during high tide cycles. Inland areas will experience gusty winds but avoid the worst impacts.
