US · Published Jul 9, 2026
A significant heat wave is gripping the western United States, with temperatures forecast to reach as high as 117°F (47.2°C) in some desert areas, including Palm Springs, California.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued extreme heat warnings and advisories for millions across the Southwest and Southeast, effective through Friday night.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat poses significant health risks, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers. Phoenix has reported 18 heat-related deaths this year, a sharp increase from the same period last year. Emergency services in the area have responded to hundreds of heat-related incidents, utilizing cold water immersion techniques to treat severe cases. The Southeast is also experiencing dangerous heat indices of 113°F to 116°F (45°C to 46.7°C), compounding the risk of heat-related illnesses. Wildfire risks are heightened due to dry conditions and lightning from thunderstorms.
