Goa experiences 20% rainfall deficit in August, mitigated by consistent monsoon activity

Goa recorded a 20% rainfall deficit in August 2026, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Panaji reporting 582 mm of rainfall against the normal 703 mm.
Despite the deficit, consistent monsoon activity helped alleviate the impact of one of the severest El Niño phenomena.

Impact & Risks

The reduced rainfall in Goa during August helped mitigate the sultry heat and supported agricultural activities, which had been delayed due to a dry June and July. However, the overall seasonal deficit of 29.7% could still pose challenges for water resources and agriculture in the region. The El Niño phenomenon, combined with a neutral Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), has limited the monsoon's intensity, potentially impacting long-term water availability and crop yields.
