Extreme Heat Warnings Issued Across Western U.S.
US · Published Jul 8, 2026
A powerful heat dome is intensifying over the western United States, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue Extreme Heat Warnings for parts of Arizona and California.
Temperatures are forecast to soar into the triple digits, with some areas reaching highs of 110–118°F (43–48°C) through at least Thursday night.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as older adults, children, outdoor workers, and those without air conditioning. Prolonged exposure can lead to dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and life-threatening heat stroke. The NWS has highlighted a 'major heat risk' for affected areas. Additionally, the heat may strain power grids due to increased air-conditioning demand and create hazardous conditions for outdoor activities, especially in desert regions and the Grand Canyon. Wildfire risks may also rise as the heat dome persists.
