US · Published Oct 6, 2026
• Phoenix is experiencing an unseasonably hot start to October, with temperatures expected to reach 100–102°F (37.8–38.9°C) from Tuesday to Thursday, October 6–
• This heatwave is driven by a strong high-pressure system over the region, coupled with low pressure to the east, which has also caused breezy conditions. Winds have been gusting up to 40 mph, kicking up dust in areas like Pinal County. Monday's high is forecasted at 99°F (37.2°C), with overnight lows remaining warm in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Southwestern Arizona, including Yuma County, will see even higher temperatures, with highs reaching 106°F (41.1°C). An extreme heat watch is in effect for parts of Yuma County on Wednesday and Thursday. Relief is expected by the weekend as a low-pressure system moves in, bringing temperatures closer to the seasonal average of 92°F (33.3°C).

Impact & Risks

The heatwave poses risks for heat-related illnesses, particularly in areas under the extreme heat watch, such as western Yuma County. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and outdoor workers, are at higher risk. Dust storms caused by strong winds may reduce visibility and impact respiratory health. Overnight temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s could make it difficult for residents to cool down, increasing the risk of heat stress.
