Severe Heatwave and High Humidity to Impact Central and Eastern US
US · Published Jun 29, 2026
A prolonged and dangerous heatwave is set to affect large parts of the central and eastern United States, with temperatures soaring above 38°C (100°F) in many areas.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for over 130 million Americans across southern and Great Plains states, with high humidity exacerbating the heat.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as older adults, children, and those without access to air conditioning. High humidity will make it difficult for the body to cool down, increasing the likelihood of heat-related illnesses. Nighttime temperatures in some areas will remain above 26°C (80°F), offering little relief. Additionally, wildfire activity is intensifying in the western US, with fatalities and injuries already reported among firefighters battling the blazes.
