Arizona Monsoon Season: What to Expect in 2026
US · Published May 27, 2026
Arizona's monsoon season, officially defined by the National Weather Service as running from June 15 to September 30, is a critical period for the state, bringing much-needed rainfall and occasional dust storms, known as haboobs.
This year, meteorologists are forecasting a potentially wetter-than-average season due to a 'super' El Niño weather pattern.
Historically, monsoon season accounts for roughly half of the annual rainfall in the Phoenix area, with southern Arizona receiving even more.

Why It's Important?

The monsoon season brings both benefits and risks to Arizona. On the positive side, the rainfall helps mitigate wildfire risks and supports desert vegetation. However, the storms can cause flash flooding, particularly in areas where the ground cannot absorb the sudden influx of water. Dust storms, or haboobs, are another hazard, reducing visibility and creating dangerous driving conditions. Residents in flood-prone areas and those traveling during storms should remain vigilant. The Phoenix area, in particular, is expected to see a mix of benefits and challenges as the season progresses.
