Severe Weather and Flash Flood Threats Target East Coast and Appalachians
US · Published Aug 17, 2026
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to impact the East Coast and parts of the Appalachians as the new week begins.
A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk has been issued for areas including Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore through Monday, with rainfall totals ranging from 1 to 2 inches.

Impact & Risks

The flash flood threat is significant for southeastern Ohio, eastern Kentucky, much of West Virginia, and southwest Virginia, where saturated ground from previous storms increases the risk of flooding. Urban areas such as Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore are also at risk of flash flooding. Severe thunderstorms in East Tennessee and Western and Central North Carolina, including cities like Chattanooga, Charlotte, and Raleigh, could produce damaging wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. These conditions may lead to localized power outages, travel disruptions, and hazardous road conditions.
