Punjab Faces Rainfall Deficit as IMD Predicts Below-Normal September Rain
IN · Published Aug 31, 2026
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast below-normal rainfall across most parts of India for September 2026, continuing the trend of a 13.8% rainfall deficit recorded during the June-August monsoon season.
Punjab is among the states significantly affected by this deficit.

Impact & Risks

The below-normal rainfall poses risks to agriculture, water resources, hydropower generation, and drinking water availability. Ecosystem sustainability may also be affected, and the likelihood of heat stress in several regions is heightened. Punjab, already experiencing a rainfall deficit, could face challenges in crop yields and water management. The IMD has emphasised the need for timely preparedness measures, including water conservation, efficient resource management, and agricultural contingency planning, to mitigate these impacts.
