The persistence of stubble burning in Punjab contributes to deteriorating air quality in North India, exacerbating health issues such as respiratory problems and environmental pollution. Tarn Taran and Amritsar are particularly affected, with the highest number of farm fires reported. Despite efforts to provide subsidised machinery and enforce penalties, the economic burden of scientific residue management remains a significant barrier for farmers, who often opt for the cheaper and quicker method of burning.
