The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Odisha as a depression over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Puri during the early hours of 20th July.
This system is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state until 23rd July, with isolated areas experiencing extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall and strong winds may lead to flash floods, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and inundation of agricultural fields. Vulnerable hilly regions could experience mudslides or landslides, while urban areas may face traffic congestion due to waterlogging. Damage to kutcha roads and houses is also possible. River water levels are expected to rise significantly, increasing the risk of flooding. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until 20th July due to hazardous conditions.
