• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Odisha as a depression over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Puri during the early hours of 20th July
• This system is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) and isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm) in districts such as Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur. Squally winds reaching speeds of 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, are forecast along the Odisha coast and adjoining areas. The IMD has also warned of flash floods, waterlogging, and potential damage to infrastructure in vulnerable areas.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall and squally winds may lead to flash floods, waterlogging in low-lying areas, inundation of agricultural fields, and landslides in hilly regions. Vulnerable kutcha houses and roads may suffer damage, and urban areas could experience traffic congestion due to reduced visibility. River water levels are expected to rise significantly, posing risks to nearby communities. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.
