A microburst, a localized and intense downdraft of wind, caused significant damage in Warren County, Indiana, on the late afternoon of August
The microburst, measuring approximately 1 mile by 1 mile, was characterized by winds estimated at 70 mph. This weather phenomenon occurs when a concentrated ball of wind descends from a storm and spreads outward upon hitting the ground. The event resulted in the snapping of large White Oaks at their base, with the damage pattern fanning outward. Additional damage was observed at a nearby farmstead, where Eastern White Pines were snapped, and tall grass in a pasture was flattened. The event was documented through aerial footage provided by a local resident, Connie Dillman.

Impact & Risks

The microburst caused localized but severe damage to trees and property in the affected area near Rainsville, Indiana. Large White Oaks and Eastern White Pines were snapped, and grasslands were flattened, indicating the strength of the winds. While no injuries or fatalities were reported, such events can pose significant risks to people, livestock, and structures in their path. The sudden and intense nature of microbursts makes them particularly dangerous for those caught outdoors or in poorly constructed buildings.
