Monsoon withdrawal begins as India faces 15% rain deficit

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from west Rajasthan as of 19 September 2026, marking the end of the June-September rainy season.
Cumulative rainfall during this period was 14.9% below the long-period average, categorising the season as deficient.

Impact & Risks

The uneven rainfall distribution has raised concerns about water availability and agricultural productivity in affected regions. While kharif crop sowing improved in July, the overall deficit and lower rainfall in August and September may impact crop yields and preparations for the rabi season. Southern, eastern, and northeastern regions are particularly vulnerable to water shortages and agricultural challenges. The IMD warns that the season may end with a national rainfall deficit exceeding 10%, which could exacerbate existing water and farming issues.
