Monsoon withdrawal begins from western Rajasthan
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the commencement of the southwest monsoon's withdrawal from parts of northwest India, with the withdrawal line currently passing through Ramgarh, Mohangarh, Phalodi, and Khajuwala in western Rajasthan as of 20 September
• This marks the annual retreat of the monsoon, which typically begins in September. Despite the withdrawal, rainfall activity remains active in several regions, with widespread showers forecast for eastern, central, and southern India over the coming week. The monsoon season so far has brought cumulative rainfall of 695.6 mm, which is 15% below the normal of 817.2 mm.

The withdrawal of the monsoon signals the transition to the post-monsoon season, which could impact agricultural activities reliant on rainfall. The below-normal cumulative rainfall may exacerbate water scarcity in some regions, potentially affecting crop yields and water resources. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in parts of eastern, central, and southern India could lead to localised flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions in daily life. Thunderstorms and lightning in east Uttar Pradesh on 25-26 September pose additional risks to residents.
