IMD Ranchi Installs Advanced Disdrometer to Enhance Rainfall Forecasting
IN · Published Aug 23, 2026
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Ranchi has installed a high-resolution disdrometer, becoming the first in the Bihar-Jharkhand region to adopt this advanced technology.
The device, installed under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences' 'Mission Mausam,' measures the size, number, and fall velocity of raindrops and hailstones.

Impact & Risks

The installation of the disdrometer is expected to significantly improve weather forecasting and rainfall analysis in Jharkhand, benefiting farmers and local communities. Accurate rainfall data is crucial for agricultural planning, especially in a region where intense rainfall can impact crops. However, the effectiveness of the new system will depend on its integration with existing weather forecasting models and the timely dissemination of information to the public.
