A catastrophic flash flood in Nepal’s Rasuwa district on 26 August 2026 has revealed the complex interplay of climate change, glacier instability, and seismic activity in the Himalayas.
The disaster, which claimed 734 lives and left thousands missing, was triggered by an ice-rock avalanche that temporarily blocked a river, leading to a sudden release of water, sediment, and debris downstream.

Impact & Risks

The disaster underscores the growing threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the Himalayas, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Rising temperatures accelerate glacier melt, increasing water accumulation in glacial lakes and weakening natural dams. India, which has recorded 62 GLOF events and the highest fatalities among Himalayan countries, faces significant risks from interconnected hazards such as avalanches, landslides, and floods. The cascading nature of these events can amplify their impact, posing challenges for preparedness and adaptation measures in downstream areas.
