Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company, has introduced a new Maritime Safety Data Hub aimed at enhancing maritime safety by analysing risks associated with global shipping. The platform integrates three years of Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) data with an analysis of 106,975 maritime safety broadcasts from
The findings reveal that weather conditions accounted for 84.6% of urgent safety messages, with storms representing 75% of these weather-related hazards. This data underscores the critical role of safety broadcasts in helping vessels anticipate and mitigate weather-related risks. The hub also provides insights into the impact of extreme weather, operational pressures, and geopolitical disruptions on maritime safety.

Impact & Risks

The analysis highlights the significant influence of weather on maritime safety, with storms being the predominant hazard. Vessels operating in regions prone to extreme weather, such as the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, face elevated risks. Additionally, geopolitical tensions and electronic interference, including GPS spoofing, further complicate navigation and operational safety. These factors increase the likelihood of distress calls and operational disruptions, posing risks to crew safety, cargo integrity, and vessel operations.
