Air Quality Advisory Issued for Reno-Sparks Due to Wildfire Smoke
US · Published Aug 11, 2026
Northern Nevada Public Health has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the Reno-Sparks area as smoke from regional wildfires, including the Bug and Fred Mountain fires, moves into the region.
Air quality models and sensor readings suggest that the Air Quality Index (AQI) could reach levels categorized as 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' (101-150) to 'Unhealthy' (151-200) for PM2.5 particles.

Impact & Risks

The smoke is expected to pose health risks, particularly to sensitive groups such as children, older adults, outdoor workers, and individuals with asthma or other lung conditions. These groups are advised to limit outdoor exposure when the AQI reaches the 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' range (101-150). Prolonged exposure to elevated PM2.5 levels can exacerbate respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. Areas closest to the wildfires and those downwind, such as Spanish Springs and North Valleys, are likely to experience the most severe air quality impacts. Residents should remain vigilant as conditions can change quickly based on wind direction and fire activity.
