Record Heat and High Humidity to Grip Eastern U.S. Through Midweek
US · Published May 20, 2026
A surge of humid air combined with record-breaking heat is set to impact the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.
According to the Washington Post, temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s°F (32-37°C) across much of the East, with cities like Richmond, Washington, Hartford, and Philadelphia forecast to experience record or near-record highs.
Nighttime temperatures will also remain unusually warm, with lows in New York City and Washington, D.C., predicted to stay in the mid-70s°F (23-24°C), exceeding typical daytime highs for this time of year.

Why It's Important?

The combination of extreme heat and elevated humidity levels poses a significant risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. The oppressive conditions may also strain energy systems due to increased air conditioning use. Severe thunderstorms are expected in the Plains and Midwest early in the week, potentially causing localized damage. The East Coast will see relief from the heat by Thursday, but the Southeast will remain at risk for heat stress and fire hazards due to dry conditions.
