The U.N.
World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has reported that El Niño is expected to strengthen between August and October 2026, exacerbating already record-breaking global heat.

Impact & Risks

The intensifying El Niño poses significant risks, including prolonged heatwaves, increased wildfire activity, and heightened stress on marine ecosystems. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, children, and those without access to cooling, face elevated risks of heat-related illnesses. In Europe, record-breaking temperatures have fueled wildfires, displacing over 200,000 people in France alone. Similarly, the U.S. and South Korea are grappling with extreme heat, straining public health systems and infrastructure. The combination of high daytime temperatures and warm nights limits recovery time, compounding health risks.
