Great Salt Lake Dust Storms Pose Health Risks to Utah Residents
US · Published Jul 17, 2026
Dust storms originating from the exposed lakebed of the Great Salt Lake are becoming increasingly frequent due to declining water levels.
Over 55% of the lakebed is now exposed, releasing harmful pollutants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial runoff into the air.

Impact & Risks

The dust storms are particularly harmful to vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Exposure to airborne particles like PM2.5 and PM10 can lead to respiratory distress, strokes, and heart attacks. Communities near Farmington Bay, such as Syracuse and Centerville, are among the hardest hit. The storms also reduce visibility and worsen overall air quality, creating challenges for daily activities and public health.
