Monster Waves Hit Southern California, Prompting Beach Warnings

A powerful south swell has brought some of the largest summer waves in years to Southern California, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing a Beach Hazard Statement through Thursday afternoon.
Orange County is experiencing the most significant impact, with waves forecasted between 8 and 10 feet in many areas and reaching up to 15 feet in some locations.

Why It's Important?

The large waves and strong rip currents pose a significant risk to swimmers, surfers, and boaters. The NWS has warned of an increased risk of ocean drowning, with waves capable of washing people off beaches and rocks, as well as capsizing small boats nearshore. Coastal flooding has already led to closures, such as the west parking lot at Aliso Beach in Laguna Beach. Lifeguards are on high alert, and beachgoers are urged to exercise extreme caution. The hazardous conditions are expected to persist through midweek before gradually easing.
