• The University of California, Davis, has released a report warning of significant coastal flooding risks in California this winter due to El Niño.
• The phenomenon is expected to cause sea-level rises of 0.6–0.9 metres, potentially leading to flooding in low-lying areas, including major roads, airports, and marshlands.

Impact & Risks

The anticipated flooding poses significant risks to infrastructure, wildlife, and local communities. Approximately 40,000 vehicles use Highway 37 daily, and its closure could result in economic losses exceeding $1.5 million per day. Endangered species, such as the salt marsh harvest mouse and Ridgway's rail, are also at risk as their habitats in Bay Area marshes face potential inundation. Coastal properties and agricultural lands could suffer extensive damage, and the disruption to transportation and local ecosystems may have long-term consequences.
