Strong El Niño Could Reshape South Texas Winter Weather
US · Published Aug 15, 2026
The NOAA Climate Prediction Center has confirmed a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño developing during the fall and winter of 2026-
This event could reach a magnitude greater than any previous El Niño recorded since 1950, with a 69% probability of a three-month Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) exceeding +2.5°C. The phenomenon is expected to significantly influence weather patterns in South Texas, potentially bringing increased rainfall and cooler temperatures.

Impact & Risks

South Texas could experience wetter and cooler conditions, which may alleviate drought but also pose risks of flooding. The region's water resources, including the Edwards Aquifer, could benefit from increased rainfall, but the distribution of precipitation will be critical. While the event raises the likelihood of impactful weather, it does not guarantee specific outcomes, such as major freezes or snowstorms.
