Northwest Wildfire Smoke to Impact Air Quality in Seattle and Portland
US · Published Aug 3, 2026
Wildfire smoke from numerous large fires in the eastern regions of Oregon and Washington is expected to move into western parts of these states, including major cities like Seattle and Portland.
The shift in wind patterns, from the typical west-to-east onshore flow to an east or northeast offshore direction, is driving the smoke into the Interstate 5 corridor and the Willamette Valley.

Impact & Risks

The wildfire smoke poses significant health risks, particularly for sensitive groups such as individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, the elderly, children, and pregnant individuals. Prolonged exposure to the smoke, which contains microscopic particulate matter, can lead to respiratory issues, inflammation, and even increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The heatwave adds another layer of risk, especially for vulnerable populations. While rain is expected in the northern Rockies next week, it may lead to flash flooding and debris flows in areas recently affected by wildfires, compounding the challenges.
